No cure for cancer has yet been found. There are rumors of cures and different treatments, but no public cure for cancer has been found. Scientists have made a lot of progress in treating cancer and developing drugs and treatments that are less dangerous and more effective than the existing ones. Generally, cancer treatments have a lot of side effects that cause further health problems in the future. Let’s have a look at the existing treatments and have a peek at some future treatments.
The most well-known treatment of cancer is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy involves administering a cocktail of very strong drugs either intravenously or orally. The drugs can be given together or one at a time. Together, these drugs target the cancer cells and kill them when effective. Chemotherapy has a lot of side-effects and can often make people very sick. It causes nausea, hair loss, and other problems later in life. This treatment is often used in combination with surgery.
Radiation therapy makes use of high energy rays to target and ‘zap’ cancer cells. This energy is used to destroy or at least shrink the cancer cells or tumor. This is sometimes effective and sometimes not. This therapy also has side effects that can cause illness later in life. The exposure to radiation can cause problems and it can also cause the death of cells surrounding the cancer cells.
Surgery is only used as a treatment when it is safe. When it is safe to cut out a tumor, surgery in combination with chemotherapy and/ or radiation is used. Surgery is a common treatment for breast and skin cancer. Mastectomies have saved many women’s lives. Surgery can be a good treatment but depending on the type and severity of cancer, many surgeries may be needed. There are always risks involved with surgery, but it has fewer negative effects than chemo and radiation therapy.
This is one of the newest types of treatment that is less harmful than chemicals or radiation. It is based on using the body’s own cells to heal itself. There have been very positive results, but it doesn’t work for everyone. Scientists are stilling perfecting this treatment.
This treatment has to do with evaluating a person’s genetic makeup and looking for potential risk indicators. Doctors will do tests to see whether certain elements that predict cancer is present and take action accordingly. With every person being treated according to his or her own unique genetic make-up and other factors, treatment will be much more effective and successful.
According to different sources, a cure is imminent. Treatments will keep improving and many believe that we will soon treat cancer well enough that it never reaches stage 4. Now, there may not be a cure yet, but it is definitely positive news. Also, visit the RESOURCES page to learn more about the types of cancer as well as treatments.
We know many things about cancer and our knowledge grows daily. There are still many things that we don’t know, but we trust our scientists and researchers will reveal all with time. Today, we want to share some of the facts about cancer that can help you understand this illness a bit better.
- Most common cancers in women – The types of cancer most commonly found in women include breast cancer, stomach cancer, cervical cancer, and lung cancer. Breast cancer is a big deal and early detection is very important. If detected early enough, the chances of survival and being cancer-free after treatment increases.
- Most common cancers in men – The types of cancer most commonly found in men include stomach cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, bronchus cancer, and lung cancer. It is important for men to look out for the signs of prostate cancer and have prostate exams if they suspect any problems.
- Sleep deprivation can cause cancer – Sleep is important. We all know that. But, did you know that not getting enough sleep increases your chances of getting cancer? Sleep deprivation has been proven to increase the risk of getting colon cancer. It also decreases your body’s immune system effectivity and makes you vulnerable to other cancer types.
- Smoking does cause lung cancer – Yes, there are people who develop lung cancer without having smoked one cigarette. And yes, people who smoke all their lives may never get cancer. However, t has been scientifically proven that more than 90% of lung cancer cases are the result of smoking. So, you may be the lucky one to side-step this consequence or you may not. Or you may be the reason why your non-smoking friend gets cancer because of your second-hand smoke. Smoking causes cancer.
- Genetics play a small role – Very few cases of cancer are genetic. Most cancers are caused by mutations or by environmental factors and bad habits. People who are related do tend to have the same type of lifestyle. They eat the same things, drink the same things, live in the same place, and share other habits that may make them more vulnerable to getting cancer. This means that people in the same family may get cancer, but it is most likely not genetic.
- The environment is important – The environment in which you live and work can also play a big role in whether you are at risk of cancer. Certain factors like pollution can increase your risk. Eating certain food like hot dogs and other processed meats can increase your risk. Drinking beverages that contain cancer-causing chemicals can increase your risk.
- Obesity increases your risk – Obesity has been proven to increase the risk of developing cancer as well as other chronic diseases and heart problems. Many different risk factors are linked to obesity and it may cause slow recovery, lower chances of survival, and more.
We hope these facts have been helpful and that you now have a better picture of certain aspects about cancer. You can also have a look at our article on the main types of cancer to learn more.
Cancer is hard on both the person who has it and the people close to that person. Living with cancer is not only something that you have to deal with but also something that your loved ones must deal with. A mother needs to accept that her child has a chronic illness and sometimes she has to accept that the illness will take her child from her. The same with a father, a brother, a sister. Friends must make peace with the fact that you will be suffering and that they will see you at your worst times after treatments. The friends that support you and sit with you through chemo, after surgery and times when you need to stay in bed are keepers. But they will also be experiencing pain when they witness what cancer is doing to you.
Everyone who loves you and is close to you need to make peace with the fact that they may lose you.
The things that change for someone are also the things that change for loved ones. They may not be the one who is going through the physical pain, but they are going through the emotional pain with you. Many mothers and fathers wish they can experience the pain instead of their child and many friends wish they can take it away or at least help you carry it.
Their perception changes. In the same way that perception changes for the patient, it changes for the loved ones. Your friends and family will also view time differently and they will also re-evaluate what is important and what they should prioritize. They will view time with you as the most precious thing and they will try and make your life as good as possible. If you are a survivor or in remission, things may go back to normal. However, if your prognosis is not so good, you can expect a lot of special plans and all of your favorite foods and movies.
They have to learn to let go. This is true for people who are in the late stages of cancer and have a short time left. You need to make peace with your own mortality and your loved ones need to make peace with losing you. They will be left behind when you go and that is a big thing to accept and deal with. Many parents who lose their children become cancer activist as their way of dealing. People have different ways of letting go.
You become their main focus. This is especially true for parents. It doesn’t matter how old you are when diagnosed. Your parents will be very attentive and concerned. It works the other way around as well. If you are a parent diagnosed with cancer, your children will be very concerned and always worrying about you. This is their way of showing they care and that they want you to live as comfortable and normally as possible while taking care of yourself.
Being the one with cancer is already a rough deal. However, do remember that the people who love you are also changed and affected because of your illness and pain.
Someone who is living with cancer or who is in remission can still live a full and happy life. Yes, there may be things that they need to change in their lifestyles, but they can still have friends, go out, have fun, have a job, etc. Getting to the point where this is possible can sometimes be tough and getting used to the changes may be difficult. All this can be made easier with the love and support of family and friends.
If you have a loved one that has or had cancer, here are a few things you can do to help them live happier and healthier.
Love them. Nothing helps as much as love. Love them, show them compassion and make sure they know how much they mean to you. When you know you have people on your side that love you no matter what changes the cancer caused, everything seems better.
Support them. They need support when going to treatments and when those treatments have side effects. They need support when going for check-ups. They need support in changing their habits and routines. They need support in deciding how they want to live the rest of their life. Support their hopes and dreams and help them get there.
Be healthy with them. A healthier lifestyle is a must for someone living with cancer as well as people who are in remission. Their body has gone or is still going through a lot, so it needs healthy foods, lots of water, exercise, and no toxins like alcohol or cigarettes. A healthy and active lifestyle can do wonders for a person’s general health whether they have cancer or not.
Don’t say stupid things. We all get flustered when we’re trying to help and comfort. It happens. However, try to avoid phrases like ‘everything will be okay’ or ‘everything will go back to normal’ or ‘there is a reason for this’, etc. You don’t know, it won’t go back to normal, and they seriously don’t want to hear that! Avoid these phrases and ones like them especially when the person is first diagnosed and just starting their journey with cancer.
Spend time with them. When your friend or a family member has to be in the hospital, go visit and watch a movie or take some board games. Spend time with them at home and go out with them. They may be less active or they may not always be able to go out at night, but it is still important to spend time with them. Don’t stop being there because they can’t hang out like before.
People who have cancer just want to know that they are loved and feel like they are going to be okay. They want to live a normal life and not be patronized or felt sorry for. So, be there for them, love them, and make sure they know that you care.

Did you know that self diagnosis is bad for you?
Have you tried feeling quite ill and tried to self diagnose using a free tool on the internet?
You might have thought that you already have a serious ailment when you’re just having an allergy. Perhaps you might have thought that a simple sports accident hasa just caused you muscle pain when you already have a fracture.
Self diagnosis with the use of the internet is not a good practice, bhy do people self diagnose? Here are some of the common reasons why people look into the internet and diagnose themselves according to the symptoms they have.
Why Do People Self Diagnose?
Medical consultations can price at least $100 for only 10 minutes in the US. Insurance companies, however, only deducts fees when you reach more than $2500 of expenses for your consultations and medical costs.
Doctors usually have very tight schedules. When you book a consultation with doctors, it may take you a week to get an appointment, that is why people tend to self diagnose instead.
Dangers of Self Diagnosis
One of the main dangers sef self diagnosis is a misdiagnosis. When you Google your symptom on the self diagnosis checker, you might think that something serious is wrong with your health even if you only have a mild illness.
On the contrary, self diagnosis is bad in a way that when you check yourself, you may think you are fine, that nothing serious should be worried about the pain and symptoms that you feel when in reality, your health conditions are worse that you think.
2. Wrong Prescription
Self diagnosis is bad such that it can give you the wrong prescriptions. A viral infection cannot be treated by an antibacterial formula, and so does a bacterial infection cannot be cured by an antiviral medicine. One of the dangers of self diagnosis is wrong prescriptions which don’t cure the condition and worse, lead to pitfalls that can be more dangerous to your body.
Misdiagnosis may lead to anxiety and mental disorders. Thinking that you might die soon because you thought you were able to self diagnose yourself with a chronic ailment may lead to depression and the lack of will to go on with life
Seek for a Professional Help
Diagnosing an illness is not only about looking at the definition according to your symptoms. Doctors use different diagnostic ways and analysis, review these records, and with the knowledge that they have gained through professional education and experience, give you the right diagnosis and provide you with the necessary treatments to gain your health back.
Get the Right Diagnosis
Self diagnosis is bad for your health. The wrong diagnosis leads to health issues that may worsen your condition either physically or mentally. If you think that there might be something wrong in your health, seeking for a professional advice is the best way to find it.
Avoid the dangers of self diagnosis from those internet checkers. Get the right diagnosis and proper treatment for your illness from a healthcare professional.
When you hear the words ‘you have cancer’ it changes everything. It changes your life. It changes the lives of your family and friends. It changes everything. This change doesn’t have to be all negative or a death sentence. Yes, some cancers are worse than others and some diagnoses are more serious than others and each person experiences the diagnosis differently.
Today, I would like to share some changes that will happen. Anyone who has been diagnosed, survived, is living with cancer, or has a friend or family member with cancer, will most likely agree with these points.
Perception changes. The perception of time. The perception of what is important. The perception of relationships. The perception of life. It all changes. Time becomes more precious. You realise what things are truly important in life – the things that you want to spend time on and the things that you want to remember. You also start understanding the value of relationships better as well as how to identify the good ones and let go of the bad ones.
You get stronger. Believe it or not, but having cancer makes you stronger. You learn to stay positive when you want to crawl up in a ball and cry. You learn to stick through the pain and come out stronger on the other side. You teach yourself to have nerves of steel and the determination and willpower of a superhero. And let’s face it, you are a superhero.
You learn to let go. A cancer diagnosis and the treatments that follow tend to be relationship enders. Many people in your life will not be able to stick around. Some because they cannot handle seeing what treatments do to you. Some because you can no longer give them the time and attention they might want. Some because they don’t like to deal with the reality of cancer. You learn to forgive them and let them go. It’s not because they don’t care. Cancer is tough and some people cannot handle it.
Small things become the big things. You learn to appreciate the small things. The important things. The drama, the mundane, the fickle – they all become unimportant. The leaves in fall, a child’s laughter, watching movies with friends, having a picnic, and all those precious moments with loved ones become the important things.
All these things change. You also undergo many physical changes that are mostly painful and uncomfortable. It does get better though. The physical changes depend on the treatments and surgery. With a change in your physical appearance, comes acceptance of the new you.
Yes, you will change and everything around you will change, but the change can be good. It can make you stronger and more appreciative of what matters. So, if you recently received a cancer diagnosis, don’t give up. Embrace the change and become your own superhero.
There are five main categories of cancer in which all the different types of cancer are divided. The categories are based on the nature of the cancer and what part of the body it attacks. Some of these are more prominent in children while others hardly ever occur in children. The same goes for adults.
The main categories include leukemia, lymphoma, sarcoma, carcinoma, and myeloma.
Leukemia is also known as blood cancer. This type of cancer infects the bone marrow and causes it to produce white blood cells that are unable to protect the body from infection. The bone marrow is where the blood cells are produced and therefore the source of blood is compromised. Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children. There are different types of leukemia including acute myelocytic leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia.
Lymphomas are cancer of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for draining toxins from the body. This type of cancer tends to appear in the stomach, brain, and intestines. There are two main types called Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is accompanied by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, while non-Hodgkin’s isn’t.
Sarcomas appear in the tissues of the body including bone, fat, muscles, and cartilage. This type of cancer looks like the tissue in which it occurs. Bone cancer is one of the most common sarcomas. Sarcomas tend to affect more people of a younger age rather than those that are older.
Carcinomas form in the epithelial layer of cells that cover our bodies and the insides of our organs. The cancer starts in these thin layers of tissue. The majority of cancer cases in the world falls into this category. Examples of cancer types in this category are breast cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, and lung cancer. The two types of carcinoma are adenocarcinoma that occurs in the organ or gland and squamous cell carcinoma that occur in squamous epithelium. The adenocarcinoma types are cancers that spread very fast and are those types that need to be detected early.
Myeloma is another type of blood cancer. This type affects the plasma cells in the blood and inhibits their ability to produce the antibodies the body needs to fight off infection. Myeloma, therefore, reduces the body’s ability to heal itself.
These are the main categories of cancer. To find out more about the types of cancer, visit the RESOURCES page for some interesting videos.
